Haiti’s Crisis – Has the World Turned It’s Back?

Haiti is in the grip of gangs. Despite sustained efforts, Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince is under the control of gangs that are creating mayhem. The crisis pone country started sliding into anarchy under the rule of President Jovenel Moïse. His assassination in 2021 left a power vacuum that gangs have taken advantage of. Haiti was trying to dig itself of the wreckage of a devastating earthquake that killed about 300,000 people. Now a consortium of gangs have aggravated the harrowing conditions inside Haiti in an intense struggle for power between police, politicians, and gangs gangs. The fight the gangs have been winning so far. 6 million people need aid because of escalating violence, gang control, and limited access to essentials like food and healthcare according to PAHO. ‪@UNICEF‬ reports that 3 million Haitian children are at risk from violence, poverty, and malnutrition, with disruption of schools. The crisis has is causing widespread displacement but Haitian who are fleeing the crisis are being rejected by many countries. They are caught in US President Trump’s effort to efforts to curb immigration and reduce foreign aid spending. Hundreds of thousands of Haitian currently who live in the U.S. under asylum claims may so be deported to a country torn by crisis and collapse of government.
